Welcome to the Basileiad Library at Manor College

The Civil War Collection at the Basileiad Library

To browse the Civil War collection at the Manor College library is like passing through a portal to yesteryear. Thumb these pages and the voices of Davis and Lincoln, the two great protagonists, speak across the decades, and all the hope, passion, and tragedy of that era comes to life again. You can even ride with Robert E. Lee as he consoles his troops after their failed charge at Gettysburg, or stand in the turret of the Monitor as she bears down on her foe on a historic March day in 1862. Turn a few more pages and you are a spectator in Wilmer McLean's parlor in Appomattox on a signal Sunday morning in 1865. Its all here in this collection, for represented on these shelves are the trilogies by Bruce Catton and Shelby Foote, the monumental Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government by Jefferson Davis, and biographies of Robert E. Lee, Ulysses Grant and Stonewall Jackson, among others. The Long Arm of Lee, a classic from the 1950s, tells the fascinating and little-known story of the Confederate artillery service. Jay Winik, a more contemporary author, is even represented; his controversial work April 1865 is prsent. So if you're a Civil War buff, just want to brush up on your American history, or are just curious, come and enjoy. It's worth the trip and its free.
